Usually with performing artists, it’s better to catch them mid-tour when they’re still fresh, with any problems ironed out.īut Tuesday night Cornell was pretty much flawless - after nearly three decades of performing, his voice sounded as good as ever, and any minor misplaced chords only added to the raw, laid-back nature of the show. Tuesday night’s show was the first night of the 30-date North American tour, which follows a similar stretch of acoustic dates staged in 2011 across the U.S., which earned critical acclaim. With these songs sitting alongside Cornell’s more traditional, riff-laden grunge tracks, his “Songbook Solo Acoustic Tour” really shows off the talents of one of his generation’s most beloved rock figures. “Seasons,” featured in the latest Superman movie “Man Of Steel,” is a true nod to blues greats, while the new song “Misery Chain,” written for the forthcoming Steve McQueen film “12 Years as a Slave,” is a more traditional folk tune. In their new scaled-back form, you realize where Cornell finds his inspiration. These hand-picked songs have been given a new lease of life. Hearing so many hits played on an acoustic guitar, you forget not only how big Cornell and Soundgarden’s back catalog is, but also how loud and abrasive they usually are. After that, Cornell returns to work on the reunited Soundgarden’s new album - its first studio set since 1996 - which he says will likely come out in the spring of 2012.He joked, laughed, gave valuable insights into his songwriting process and even took requests. 21 stop at New York’s Carnegie Hall and wraps up Dec. 1 in Memphis, sandwiching four South American shows into the 30-date itinerary that also includes a Nov. It was something I wanted to give back, and I wanted to do it right away because I was just really knocked out by how it was received.” “All I was concerned about was finding versions of the songs that sounded like it felt like they sounded when I was there. “I wanted to get the infancy of this out there, because it’s very sparse, very rough, very new,” Cornell explains. 21 “Songbook” album - featuring 15 songs recorded during his spring tour plus a studio version of “The Keeper” from for the film “Machine Gun Preacher” - captures that spirit of his early shows.
